// Today, as in the 5th of February, is always my least favorite day of the year (except expat Thanksgiving of course, but I don't have to worry about that one anymore). It's the day after my birthday and I'm invariably feeling deflated like one of those sad looking helium balloons the day after a party. All of the excitement and joy of yesterday, the tons of emails and Facebook messages, gone. Meh. (Yes I'd like a little cheese with my whine thank you for very much.)
// Lately I've been obsessed with the 80s. My full on nostalgia is being fueled by The Carrie Diaries and The Goldbergs. I cannot get enough of those shows, they make me long for my childhood. Man, I want to go back to 1985! It really was a simpler time (and poofier with lots more neon).
// I'm finally reading Gone With the Wind. I'm about halfway through, it's fantastic, I truly cannot believe that I've made it this far into my life without reading it. One of the best things about it is Scarlett's use of the phrase, "oh fiddle-dee-dee" which I'm guessing she says instead of, "oh f**k". It reminds me of my Nana who would say, "oh fiddlesticks" or sometimes "oh fiddle-faddle" when she was feeling extra fancy. I need to try and say that instead of the F word. I'm not sure if it's because of the stress of the move or what, but I'm saying, F U you know what, way too often lately. It's not dignified.
// Fifty's crate for his flight to America arrived. He was very skeptical at first but only one day after it arrived, he was in it (Confession: A few slices of ham may have helped). I've since put his bed inside of it and now he hangs out in there whenever he goes for a lie down. I'm so relieved.
// The night before my birthday, I got an early present; Bradley Cooper speaking French on the news again. Enjoy.
// Justin Beiber. Ugh. Discuss.
Bisous!
Happy late birthday, hope you had a good one! I totally agree, the day after your birthday is always such a blah day! And Justin Beiber well I am just glad he is not that popular here in Iceland.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday! Does he mean "transvestite"?
ReplyDeleteNo, I think he means something sad and absurd. Actually, for all I know he could actually mean, transvestite! You never know with Gregory. But then that means he called Fifty a transvestite!
DeleteHappy belated birthday! I hate the day after my birthday, too. It's always such an anticlimax. Just like the few days after the Christmas holidays.
ReplyDeleteAlso belated happy birthday. That is awesomely exciting to listen to Bradley Cooper speaking French. I think I understand what they were saying, more or less. Although sometimes I understand exactly the opposite of what they are saying. Do the French think his French is as good as I do?
ReplyDeleteWell, he starts by asking the interviewer if he can tutoie (informal you) him so that's a sign that he doesn't master vouvoiement (formal you), especially since I heard him slip up and tutoie an interviewer after he used the formal you in another interview (that's really taboo in France). That's why he asked this interviewer if he could use the informal you - because he knows he will slip up (so good for him I say, for asking to use the informal you instead of trying and embarrassing himself when he slips up). But then, ouch, the interviewer uses the formal you when addressing him for the entire interview so it's kind of awkward.
DeleteI'd say his French is pretty good for somebody who has only spent six months here. But then again, he probably has the money to have private lessons every day if he wanted to. He doesn't know how to pronounce the French u, a classic problem for the native English speaker, but that doesn't impede on understanding what he is saying. He also slips up a few times with his use of false friends (he says arabique for the English word Arabic when it should be arabe). Regardless, he seems to understand what the interviewer is saying and responds appropriately.
I really think it takes courage to go on national television without an interpreter. I would never have the nerve to do that!
Happy belated birthday! It's true, the day after is always kind of a let down after so much fun and attention, but it's just on to other fun things!
ReplyDeleteJust when I thought Bradley Cooper couldn't get any hotter....he speaks French. Wow.
ReplyDeleteBradley Cooper speaks French too? He keeps getting higher and higher in my estimations. I told him on his Instagram how much I loved Silver Linings Playbook, in December, and he wished my family and I a Happy Christmas......faint!
ReplyDeleteMy Grandma used to say 'fiddlesticks!'. Love it! x

I'm a bad girl - Happy Belated Birthday my dear! At least you're not as old as me - that comparison is my gift to you for eternity.
ReplyDeleteDon't tell me you're not a Belieber? But he's had such a hard life and overcome such incredible odds...
Love that pic of the gate - do you remember we took a picture of J and S in front of it because of the letters in the ironwork. Ah, those were the days. I miss them (and you). x x
I missed your birthday(:. Hope it was a great day. So glad Fifty is liking his crate. I refuse to even think about Justin Bieber, never mind discuss him.
ReplyDeleteHappy happy happy happy birthday, Sara! I hope it was fantastic! You deserve all the best in the world! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't believe you are obsessed with the exact same shows! I LOVE Carrie Diaries and Goldbergs! They make me laugh so much and I get reminded of soooo many things!
Well, even though today is a bit of a let down, I hope you had a great birthday!!
ReplyDeleteI hope your birthday was filled with light and joy, and perhaps some Dionysian revelry.
ReplyDeleteHappy happy belated birthday, dear! May this year bring you even more joy, and heart-inflation ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy belated bday! I love Gone with the wind. Scarlett is so awesomely sassy. And holy cow Bradley Cooper and his French skillz! Je suis impressed ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday! Just think, you've got a whole 'nother year to plan the bigger, better party.
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you birthday twin! Although I worked yesterday too, so that wasn't much fun either lol
ReplyDeleteI'm totally laughing at the 'travesty' word phenomenon :oD
Gone with the Wind = :) I do wish that more people still said things like fiddle dee dee - think about how much more fun conversations would be!
ReplyDeleteBradley Cooper en français = :) :) although I have to say, "American Bluff" just doesn't have the same ring to it...
Happy Birthday a little late, Sara. "Gone with the Wind" is such an awesome read. I'm glad you're getting to enjoy it. My mom always said, "Fiddlesticks!" Moving is always so stressful! Take care!
ReplyDelete1) Carrie Diaries is one of my favorites!! Such a fun guilty pleasure show.
ReplyDelete2) GWTW is my faaaavorite book!! So heart breaking and beautiful at the same time. And quite different than the movie!
3) Bless Bradley for that birthday gift.
1) I think this time of year is deflating in general… after the holidays. Before the spring. Whatever.
ReplyDelete2) I LOVED that book. Other than it was so freaking long. The follow up was 800 pages and felt like a breeze after that. There's SO much they don't put in the movie. Love!
3) Glad Fifty is liking his crate. I've thought about flying with Tango but I can't bring myself to. I'm probably worrying too much.
Bradley Cooper is even more AWESOME in French :) Hope you had a great birthday! And thanks for reminding me I need to catch up on some Carrie Diaries asap! I love to pretend I was there when it all happened.. I feel like I should go to New York too ;)
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, Sara, you're not alone in feeling down the day after your birthday. I feel the same as you and I also feel terrible on January 2nd. I pity anyone who has a birthday the first week of January.
ReplyDeleteI think my favourite song from the 80s is Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I never get tired of watching the music video for this song. I don't know, there just something about all those girls dancing crazily around the house that amuses me. I think I'll just go and watch that video right now!
One thing that surprised me about Cyndi is that she was 30 when she filmed the video and song came out. So girls in their 30s really do just want to have fun!
DeleteHappy Birthday, Sara! OMG, I am crazy about The Carrie Diaries. I freakin follow the show and a couple of the actors on twitter I love it so much. I am also a freakin fan of the f-bomb sometimes, but you're right, it isn't dignified. I use it way too often. Should save it for very dire situations and swap out fiddlesticks instead. Love that!
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday!
ReplyDeletehappy late bday - I always feel so blah after my birthday is over too. and that's good fifty likes his crate! my dogs don't hate theirs but rarely do they just go in them to hang out. i'm sure some ham wouldn't hurt :)
ReplyDelete-- jackie - jade and oak
Hahaha travesty! You know what is a travesty? that I'm just now wishing you happy birthday. So... happy Birthday a little late! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy belated Birthday!!
ReplyDeleteI love Gone With the Wind! It's such an amazing movie! I honestly didn't even know it was also a book, I may have to put it on my list!
ReplyDeleteI also love the Bachelor. Its horrible and cheesy but a trainwreck I just can't stop watching!
Thanks for posting Bradley! I'm going to show my students. And I've never read Gone With the Wind either. I kinda want to now though.
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Birthday!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting seeing Bradley Cooper speaking French. Will try and get a download to show my France Class. Have enjoyed reading your blog and wish you all the best in your new adventure in the USA. By the way, will you be revealing the name of LPV when you leave?
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday! I loved Gone With the Wind. The "sequel" was really "meh" though, just to warn you :P
ReplyDeleteisn't travestie how the French say transvestite? Eddie Izzard taught me that :P
