Agnès Morel is the local cleaner. For twenty years she has led a tranquil life, going about her simple day to day routine of cleaning the medieval Cathedral and doing odd jobs for the townspeople. She is a quiet and constant presence in the town, but none of its inhabitants truly know her; not where she is from, or why she suddenly turned up twenty years before. Agnès's past is a mystery, a mystery that is, until a chance encounter dredges up long harbored secrets of tragedies past. It doesn't take long before ugly gossip is swirling around Chartres and the peaceful life Agnès has built for herself is threatened.
In The Cleaner of Chartres, it's author, Sally Vickers tells a captivating story of redemption and self-discovery. It's a mysterious read full of intrigue and beautifully drawn characters bursting from the pages. And thanks to Penguin, I have a copy to giveaway to a lucky one of you!

Or maybe Lord of the Rings.
One of those two definitely.
Oh no, whatabout The Crow Road. Or The Nights Dawn trilogy. Or The Amber Spyglass. Or -
Oh crap, look what you've started....

ReplyDeleteMy love of Provence was confirmed by reading my favorite book of all time "A Year in Provence" by Peter Mayle.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, if YOU wrote a book, it could easily be my favorite because I LOVE your writing style. But, seeing that you haven't - yet -my favorite is one from middle school, The Outsiders.
ReplyDeleteI like SO many books but my two favorites are Marley & Me and The Longest Trip Home, both by John Grogan. I love the way he writes.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite would be one of John Irving's... possibly A Prayer for Owen Meany or World According to Garp. Thanks for the giveaway and for adding yet another book to my virtual, ever-growing to-read shelf that never seems to have any more space!
ReplyDeleteThere are too many ... Cloud Atlas maybe? Or The Shell Seekers, they're both way up there. I'd pick A Year in Provence if it hadn't been mentioned already. That book has put me on a mission to move to France, sometime in my lifetime, soon.
ReplyDeleteSo many good books to chose from as a favorite of all time. I would have to go with either The Five People You Meet In Heaven or the Harry Potter series. What hard question.
ReplyDeleteFavorite book is The Bible, but I do love books set in France and this one sounds especially interesting....
ReplyDeleteI love 'The Alchemist'by Paulo Coelho. I get something different from every reading of it.
ReplyDeleteTo Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book of all time. But so many to choose from.......
ReplyDeleteWhat a devious question. Have wracked my brain andcan't tell you. Love, love, love to read - biographies and historical fiction in my youth, mysteries and the occasional bio now, but no one book that i have returned to, or that i constantly recommend. Am going to choose 'The Little Prince' because it's the first book i read in French - for you!

I'm not trying to score extra points here, but I'd have to say "A Year in Provence". It holds a very special place in my heart for what it led me to. If I had to choose a novel, it would be "Mila 18" about the Jewish ghetto uprising in Warsaw.
ReplyDeleteFavourite book - it changes...I dunno, it would be something by Stephen King. Salem's Lot or The Shining. Or maybe the Stand, that was pretty epic.
ReplyDelete"Das alte Haus" - a children's book full of short stories. My mom always read it to me.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book is A Moveable Feast by Hemingway. Chartres is one of my all time favorite places so I would enjoy this book. Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteLord of The Rings all the way
ReplyDeleteMy favourite book of all time...well, whatever I'm reading at the moment...or the Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy
